Year 4. Social problems: Racism

Thanks a million for your comments guys, they are all brilliant! Hope you enjoyed it.

IS THIS AD RACIST?
Sony's ad campaign to promote its new all-white PSP is causing a row over claims of racism. What do you think?
Under the banner 'White is Coming' the ad shows a white woman grabbing the face of a shorter black woman.
The company says the campaign was designed to show the contrast between the black and white model.
Sony have now pulled the ad and replaced it with new photos which just show the new console itself. Is that the right move?

WHAT YOU ARE SAYING

Despite the opinion of a handful of people, as a black woman and I am sure my opinion is shared by many others, I would also deem a picture of a black man/woman grabbing a white man/woman's face as offensive. The mere fact that an advert for a piece of equipment which will be used by many of the younger generation should be advertised in a violent manner is offensive and inappropriate.

I think this image is explicitly racist and I will be boycotting Sony products in every form and ‘I suggest you guy’s do the same’ and lets see how Sony’s sales will slump. After all, it is us black people who are the ones that are at the forefront of purchasing such goods which then help make companies such as Sony to generate huge profits, resulting in the successes of the company.

Well done BBC!!!! You also fail to point out that this ad campaign came in 3 parts. This picture, one where the black girl is dominant and one where the 2 are squaring off. Therefore the ad actually promotes equality.

In my opinion, the image portrays white dominance. The white model clearly is the aggressor in the picture with the black model showing fear and defeat with no signs of defense or willingness to fight against the offensive party. The white model is somewhat portrayed as a "racist" figure which was once typical of "punks" with the mohecan hairstyle. Even the dress code and the look of the blakc model is one of how slaves dressed and looked in the colonial days. The advertisment is blatantly offensive and should never have made it past the office of the Advertising Department of Sony. I am dissapointed in Sony and I am sure that their bottom line would be affected!
